doma architects was formed in 2010 by Chartered architects Ruth Donnelly and James Mate following comments from family and friends whose experience of employing architects had led to confusion and frustration. We wanted to address their concerns by making the process more transparent and easier to understand and control.
Ruth Donnelly BA(hons) BArch(hons) Dip PPM RIBA studied architecture at the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne. She gained early experience with JM Architects in Leeds, then progressed to Project Architect at Smith Scott Mullan Associates in Edinburgh, working on small and large scale residential projects. A recent desire to experience life "down under" gave Ruth the opportunity to work with SJB Interiors in Sydney, gaining invaluable experience in interior architecture and design.
James Mate BArch(hons) BArch(hons) Dip PPM RIBA studied architecture at Nottingham and Newcastle Universities. During this period he worked with Yorkshire practice Wildblood Macdonald. James then worked with Richard Murphy Architects in Edinburgh, on a number of projects including the multimillion pound Haymarket scheme. James spent a year in Australia during which time he worked for Collins Taylor Architecture in Sydney. James has recently been appointed Partner at Wildblood Macdonald but maintains a keen interest in doma architects.
